Their story
Three generations of the Al-Khalili family — eight people — live in a two-room apartment in Deir al-Balah. Grandfather Mahmoud, 74, was a grocer himself for forty years; he reads the market prices to his grandchildren like weather reports. Diabetes forced the family to sell their savings of gold last winter to keep bread and lentils on the table.
